Olonets Arms Factory
Olonets Arms Factory
History reference
By decree of Peter I, in 1703 at the confluence of the Lososinka River into Onega (Petrozavodsk city nowadays), one of the Olonets state-owned mining plants was founded — the Shuisky or Petrovsky arms factory, later also called the Olonets Arms Factory. Petrovsky factory produced cold steel and firearms. The Olonets factories especially enjoyed flourishing on military orders during the Northern War (1700–1721) under the command of their commandant, the Dutchman Georg Gennin. After the death of Peter I and the transfer of Gennin to the Ural plants, the mining business in Obonezhie began to diminish. By 1732, almost all of the Olonets factories were closed, the main arms factory together with the production and with the craftsmen were transferred to the Sestroretsk Arms Factory.
