Russian architect, restorer and teacher, founder of scientific restoration and conservation in Russia. Born in 1808. Graduated from the Academy of Arts; received the Artist-Architect title in 1833. Was elected as a member of the Milan Academy of Arts and received the title of academician of the Imperial Academy of Arts in 1840. Held the rank of Senior Architect of the Grand Kremlin Palace (author of the projects of the Vladimirsky and Alexandrovsky Halls of the GKP) from 1843 to 1849 . Also was the Director of the Moscow Palace Architectural School (1842-1865). He was a senior architect in the construction of buildings in the Kremlin, in charge of the construction of the Armory. Took postition of the Chief Architect of the Grand Kremlin Palace in 1854. He headed the work on the measurements and description of the monuments of ancient Russian architecture. During the 1850s he began an active work on the restoration of architectural monuments: the Borovitskaya Tower of the Moscow Kremlin, the Ipatiev Monastery in Kostroma, the Chambers of the Romanov Boyars, the walls of the Pskov Kremlin and many others. He died in 1868.
